How Medicare options work

This is general educational information. Your choices depend on your own situation. For complete information, visit Medicare.gov.

Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Run by the federal government. Part A is hospital insurance. Part B is medical insurance, such as doctor visits and outpatient care. You can generally see any provider that accepts Medicare.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Plans offered by private companies approved by Medicare. They provide your Part A and Part B coverage and often include prescription drug coverage. Many use provider networks, and costs and rules vary by plan.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Policies sold by private companies that work alongside Original Medicare to help pay some out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles and coinsurance. They generally do not include drug coverage.

Part D (Prescription Drugs)

Drug coverage offered by private companies approved by Medicare. It can be a stand-alone plan used with Original Medicare, or included in many Medicare Advantage plans.

Frequently asked questions

When can I first sign up for Medicare?

Most people have an Initial Enrollment Period that lasts seven months: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after. Your situation may differ if you are still working or have other coverage. Medicare.gov and Social Security can confirm your dates.

What is the Annual Enrollment Period?

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs October 15 through December 7 each year. During this time, people with Medicare can review and change Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug coverage. Changes generally take effect January 1.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare and provide Part A and Part B coverage, often with networks and different cost-sharing. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies work alongside Original Medicare to help with some out-of-pocket costs. They work differently, and the right fit depends on your own needs.

What is Medicare Part D?

Part D is prescription drug coverage offered by private companies approved by Medicare. It can be a stand-alone plan used with Original Medicare, or included in many Medicare Advantage plans.

Do I have to work with an agent to enroll?

No. You can get information and enroll directly through Medicare.gov, by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048), or through your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (in Florida, SHINE). Working with a licensed agent is one option.

Is filling out the contact form a Scope of Appointment?

No. Nothing on this website, including the contact form, is a Scope of Appointment. If you choose to meet to discuss specific plan types, a Scope of Appointment will be completed separately as required.
